Our Kids Summer Camp is about kids having fun and learning to sail. In addition to sailing being a fun and challenging sport that gets young people outdoors and interacting with nature, it also fosters many important attributes and characteristics. This is because sailing is one of the few sports that is intellectual and dynamic, requiring brains and brawn in equal measure. Principal among the many sound reasons why parents want to teach their kids to sail are:

  • Leadership, teamwork and inter-personal skills
  • Independence, self-sufficiency and assertiveness
  • Balance & co-ordination, wind appreciation
  • Competition, where girls and boys can compete equally

The camp is for groups of 20-42 kids and runs from Monday to Friday during the school holidays.

5-Day Camp Itinerary

Day Activity

Day 1 & 2
Level 1
Start Sailing

By the end of this training step, delegates will be able to sail a boat comfortably under supervision around a triangular course in light conditions and in a controlled environment (i.e. inside the marina).

Day 3 & 4
Level 2
Go Sailing
By the end of this training step, delegates will be able to sail a boat independently on all points of sail inside or outside the marina. Delegates attaining this level are permitted to hire club boats. This level of qualification would only be undertaken where we were comfortable that the students were ready for it, particularly with the younger age groups.

Day 5
Race Day

Final fun day and prize giving, to include boat rigging race, knot race, obstacle race, water tennis.

The focus of our kids courses is fun and we incorporate lots on-water games so that in many instances the children do not realise how much they are learning. Qualification certificates are awarded for each student that successfully completes each level. Take home souvenirs include photograph, sailing book and T-shirt.

Age Groups
Students are divided up according to their age group so that games and activities can be set at an appropriate level. The age groups are:

  • Sharks and Dolphins 8-12 years of age
  • Pirates and Mermaids 13-16 years of age
  • Explorers 16-18 years of age

We regret that we can't take kids younger than 8.

Safety Policy

Safety is of paramount concern in any water based or adventure activity and we, at the Beijing Sailing Centre, take this very seriously. The following are features of the centre:

  • We follow the standards set by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) for overseas sail training centres.
  • Our instructors are RYA qualified and we maintain the recommended ratio of instructors to students. Thuswe have a maximum of 9 students with a single instructor; a maximum of 6 boats to one instructor.
  • Our fleet of Topper boats have been imported from the United Kingdom. They are International Sailing Federation (ISAF) approved training boats and have been designed for beginners to learn sailing quickly and safely.
  • All sailors are required to wear buoyancy aids on the water at all times and these are provided.
  • For children and beginners, we require that they wear helmets when sailing and these are provided.
  • We maintain a fleet of high-speed rigid inflatable boats (RIB) to provide safety cover on the water.
  • In case of poor weather conditions, we provide wetsuits for sailors to keep warm. These are not typically necessary during the summer.
